The Collaborative, Educating During the Pandemic Together!

Parents, teachers, School Leaders and Community Members come to the table on The Collaborative to highlight what’s going well and work through problems with the new normal together.  Two innovative school principals, Sheka Houston and Tammy Taylor which have 40 years of educational experiences between the two of them, saw a need to bring people together to better help everyone navigate the murky waters of pandemic education.  This space is not expected to be a finger pointing session, but a safe place for true solutions and positive promotion of great solutions that have already been developed.  These school leaders have transformed schools with impactful strategic planning, literacy, and cultural relevancy focuses.

So far on the collaborative, parents have revealed, that the continuing changing of resources and apps that some teachers are back and forth between frequently can be a  little overwhelming and frustrating.  Parents who have chosen homeschool as option revealed that sticking to a strict schedule without much flexibility was too difficult for a family with multiple children around the same ages, so the public virtual option did not work for them.  Innovative teachers have kept students engaged at a distance with project based learning and kinesthetic strategies.  These teachers have also developed great relationships with parents and communicate with them regularly as the child’s learning facilitator.  District superintendents have revealed, we are learning as we go and we are listening.  They have also been open to new parent choice options that were not available before.  The latest episode highlighted career and technology education, and how engagement problems have not been an issue in this arena, because it is based on student interest and provides “hands on learning”.  The very next day a former student, Ka’Nya Givens, who completed the fire and safety program through her local CATE center and became the first female firefighter in her county, was featured on Kelly and Ryan!

Episodes occur each week on Tuesday’s at 7 pm.  Daily tips and resources are posted for parents and educators on the page.  The Facebook live segments are only 30 minutes and features a new author each week since hosts, Sheka and Tammy are such huge proponents of literacy, stresses the importance of students reading 20 minutes a day.  Featuring new authors ensures that families are being exposed to new books since “there is no such thing as a child who hates to read, but only children who have not found the right book” Frank Serafini.  In addition, the school leaders are helping educators expand their literacy offerings for students which includes culturally relevant offerings as well.  These episodes have invoked conversations across states and will continue each week.  You wouldn’t want to miss the upcoming Game Changer episodes that will be packed with solutions and great information for all.  The principals have been contacted by so many people about their innovative offerings, they will have an upcoming offering that will help innovators do business with K-12 schools.  Visit www.Facebook.com/createandeducatesolutions  and like the page to join the conversation.  Help others that may need help and spread the word.  Invite them to the page…parents, teachers, school leaders, media specialists, other educators, parents, community advocates, children’s book authors and anyone with a desire to get innovative ideas into K-12 schools.
