On yesterday’s edition of “Tamron Hall,” in a daytime exclusive reunion, the cast of “New York Undercover,” Malik Yoba, Luna Lauren Vélez and Michael DeLorenzo announced a nationwide reunion tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the show’s debut on FOX. The trio revealed that today’s broadcast appearance was their first talk show interview together as a cast, despite “New York Undercover” being the #1 series in Black and Latino households at the time. ‘New York Undercover’ cast sits down for their first daytime interview ever, 25 years after finale:
Malik explained, “We understood the assignment. The assignment was to move the culture forward in the most authentic way possible so whether or not it was the music, whether it was fashion, whether it was subject matters and unfortunately, we used to call it ‘the little ghetto show that could’ because from a business perspective, we were never given like – Michael made a point backstage – the three of us never appeared on any talk show during that time. There was never a poster, there was never a billboard, there was never a t-shirt and so we succeeded despite that…We would travel to affiliates around the country and you could see like every other FOX show – ‘Party of Five,’ ‘90210,’ they would line the hallways, you would never see us and so despite the fact that we were #1 in Black and Latino households at the time, it wasn’t regarded as mainstream fare so it was treated like a second-class citizen or ‘the little ghetto show that could.’”
‘New York Undercover’ cast is celebrating the show’s 30th anniversary with multi-city tour:
Malik said, “That’s why we’re here today. Not just to talk about the 30th anniversary but how we can bring this moment forward right? Audiences never had the chance to have these experiences with us so we intend to go on the road as a cast. You’re invited! Here’s another iconic moment: we chose to be on your show, real talk, to launch the fact that we, as a celebration of 30 years, are going to hit markets across America. We’re working with artists that have performed on the show.”
Luna Lauren Vélez on the success of “American Rust” season two:
On bringing to life a great character, “That’s exactly what it is. It is bringing to life a great character. So often as actors, we don’t get to, especially actors of color, it’s sort of like, you’re playing this role and you don’t have the B story or the C stories, it’s not about you. What’s brilliant about ‘American Rust’ is that they’re really invested in all of the actors and their stories as their characters which is what attracted me to it because I wasn’t really looking to do that kind of role again. It’s just wild to be able to have these opportunities, which is what I think our show [‘New York Undercover’] helped to do.”
