Rollin’ Into Nostalgia: Celebrating 20 Years of “Roll Bounce

I hadn’t been on roller skates in years! Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, skating was a weekly adventure for me and my friends. We were regulars at USA Skating Rink in Wickliffe, a spot I started going to as a pre-teen. My mom an avid skater herself was the one who taught me how to skate, and from that moment on, I was hooked.
Over the years, I had my skating crew first Monica, Theya, and me and later, my best friend Heather. We kept skating well into adulthood, right up until we had kids of our own. Skating was more than just fun; it was an amazing workout and a way to stay active.

Yesterday, attending the 20th anniversary celebration of the film Roll Bounce at the legendary “Cascade” skating rink brought back so many wonderful memories from those skating days. The movie, set in the late ’70s right around the time I first fell in love with skating tells the story of Xavier (played by Bow Wow), a teenager in Chicago coping with the loss of his mother. He and his friends rule their local rink, but when it closes, they’re forced to venture into the more upscale Sweetwater Roller Rink, where they must prove themselves against the reigning champions, led by the charismatic skater Sweetness.

I still have my roller skates and hope to pass the tradition down to my grandsons one day. My own kids enjoyed skating, but not nearly as much as I did growing up it truly was a huge part of my childhood.
