Sherri Shepherd opened up about the moment that first pushed her toward stand-up comedy:
“I was working as a legal secretary, studying to become a paralegal and court reporter and honestly, life felt a little boring! Secretaries type all day and go to bed by eight. So I told the other secretaries, ‘Let’s get out of here and have some fun!’ We ended up at The Comedy Store on Sunset. Once we sat down, I was so excited that I kept making everyone around me laugh. Then Andrew Dice Clay hit the stage. His set riled up a lot of the women, and one lady turned to me and said, ‘You’re just as funny as he is you should be up there.’ That moment changed everything. It’s why I believe so strongly in the power of the tongue it can tear someone down, or it can plant a beautiful seed. And that woman planted mine.”
Sherri also shared the inspiration behind her new children’s book, The Sunshine Queens:
“The Sunshine Queens are really all of my girlfriends about seven amazing women who have carried me through so much in my life. I wanted to create a book for young girls because I don’t feel our kids are being protected the way they should be. Girls need to know the power of saying no and the importance of self-worth. I wanted them to know that yes, you can stand strong on your own… but life is so much sweeter when you have your girlfriends beside you.”
