A Love Letter to Couture: Experiencing Viktor&Rolf Up Close

For more than three decades, Dutch design duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren collectively known as Viktor&Rolf have been redefining the relationship between fashion and art. Self-described “fashion artists,” they are known for pushing boundaries through conceptual design, impeccable craftsmanship, and a fearless, avant-garde point of view rooted in fashion history.

Currently on view at the High Museum of Art, this exhibition marks the first U.S. museum show dedicated entirely to Viktor&Rolf and the first project sponsored by the Lauren Amos Fashion Project. The presentation features over 100 of their most daring creations, alongside sketches, videos, dolls, and photographs that offer an intimate look at their creative process. Their collections often begin with abstract ideas and evolve into theatrical runway performances, where fashion becomes storytelling and the designers themselves often take part.

From voluminous romantic gowns layered with miles of soft tulle to sculptural silhouettes accented with bold text and provocative slogans, the craftsmanship is nothing short of extraordinary. Seeing the pieces up close was truly inspiring especially the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden satin, PVC, and Swarovski crystal floral dress, as well as the gravity-defying corseted tulle gowns that felt both dramatic and wearable.
