Anika Noni Rose Returns to Broadway in “The Balusters”

Actress Anika Noni Rose whom many lovingly think of as Princess Tiana stopped by Live with Kelly and Mark this morning, where she was warmly welcomed back to the spotlight. Returning to her Broadway roots after a two-year break, she reflected on her incredible journey, sharing that her debut dates back to around 2000 when she stepped into Footloose as Rusty just three months after arriving in New York.

Now, she’s back on stage starring in The Ballisters, the only original American play on Broadway this spring. The production, written by David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Kenny Leon, reunites her with familiar creative energy. Anika plays Kira, a woman navigating life in a seemingly perfect neighborhood that quickly reveals itself to be anything but simple. With themes centered around community, change, and differing perspectives, the story blends drama and comedy in a way that feels both timely and relatable. She also shared her admiration for her castmates, including Richard Thomas, describing the ensemble as both talented and full of heart.

Beyond the stage, Anika is continuing her reign in the literary world with her new book A Princess is a Princess, a heartfelt project aimed at reminding children that being a princess isn’t about appearance, but about character, kindness, and self-love. With such an inspiring message, she hopes to empower young readers to embrace who they are from the inside out.
