At 70 years old, former late-night talk show host Arsenio Hall sat down with Good Morning America to reflect on his legendary career and discuss his new book, “Arsenio: A Memoir.”
Hall, who hosted the groundbreaking “The Arsenio Hall Show” for six seasons, looked back on some of the unforgettable moments that made his show a cultural phenomenon. From interviews with icons like Madonna, Prince, and Tupac, to unforgettable pop-culture moments, Hall admitted that at the time he didn’t always realize just how historic those appearances would become.
One of the most iconic moments he recalled was then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton playing the saxophone on his show, a performance that many believe reshaped how politicians connect with pop culture and voters.
Hall also shared a powerful memory involving Magic Johnson, who chose The Arsenio Hall Show for one of his first major appearances after publicly revealing he was HIV positive. Hall remembered being surprised Johnson wanted to come to his show instead of a traditional news program, but Johnson explained he needed to be somewhere he felt comfortable and surrounded by love.
Another behind-the-scenes story involved Eddie Murphy’s classic film “Coming to America.” Hall revealed the movie nearly didn’t happen after a disagreement between Murphy and director John Landis. Thankfully, the two eventually reconciled, saving what would become one of the most beloved comedies of its generation.
The comedian also touched on his famous romance with Paula Abdul, joking that the two were the “Walmart version of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce” back in the day. Hall even made a surprise appearance in Abdul’s iconic “Straight Up”music video after simply showing up to pick her up from the set.
Despite decades in entertainment, Hall says writing the memoir was deeply personal. Inspired by his 26-year-old son, he wanted to share his true story and set the record straight on rumors and misconceptions that have followed him throughout his career.
With humor, honesty, and plenty of behind-the-scenes stories, “Arsenio: A Memoir” offers fans a closer look at the man behind one of television’s most influential talk shows. See more inside..
