Singer & Songwriter Ella Mai Talks About Audition That Went Wrong

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ella Mai stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show to talk about the inspiration behind the title of her newest album, “Do You Still Love Me?”, and treated the audience to an exclusive performance of her latest single, “100.”

During the conversation, Ella also reflected on her early years, sharing how she moved from London to New York City at just 12 years old. While the transition wasn’t easy at first, she eventually fell in love with the city and considers it one of her favorite places in the world.

She also recalled a memorable early setback missing out on an audition for the prestigious Frank Sinatra School of the Arts because she didn’t know the U.S. National Anthem, which was required for the audition. Having just arrived from England, the young singer simply wasn’t familiar with it at the time, and the experience happened to fall on her 13th birthday.

Of course, things worked out just fine. Ella Mai went on to become a global star, with her 2018 smash hit “Boo’d Up”holding the record for the most weeks at No. 1 for a female artist on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
