Tom Cruise is nearly unrecognizable in his bold transformation as Digger Rockwell in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming film Digger and it’s a performance that leans all the way in. Gone is the polished action star; in his place stands a weathered oil tycoon, complete with graying hair, deep-set lines, a pronounced paunch, and a booming, larger-than-life drawl that commands every scene. This is Cruise in full character mode, and he’s clearly having fun with it.
CinemaCon audiences were treated to an extended first look, including an early sequence that unpacks the staggering global fallout of Rockwell’s actions hinting at a catastrophic $18 trillion in damage. The footage balanced sharp tension with an unexpected dose of dark humor, offering a glimpse into a story that’s as provocative as it is entertaining. While the preview turned heads, Iñárritu noted the film is still very much a work in progress.
Cruise described the project as “wild” and “funny,” calling it the kind of daring, offbeat storytelling that reignited his passion for filmmaking. Iñárritu, meanwhile, framed the narrative as a study in unchecked ego—exploring the delusion of control in the face of inevitable failure. At its core, the film follows a powerful man whose decisions don’t reshape the world itself, but instead distort how people see it—culminating in a spectacularly bad choice that’s as absurd as it is fascinating to watch unfold.
Digger is slated to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
