Johnny Depp delivered one of San Diego Comic-Con’s biggest surprises on July 23, making an unexpected appearance in full character as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film, Ebenezer.
As Collider’s Directors on Directing panel came to a close, the lights suddenly dimmed and the words “Johnny Depp is Ebenezer” flashed across the convention hall screens. Moments later, Depp emerged onstage dressed as Scrooge complete with a top hat, cane, and candle to perform a theatrical monologue in character.
Addressing the packed audience, the famously grumpy Scrooge quipped, “Have you all no lives? No responsibility? Why are you here?” before joking that, since fans had traveled so far, he had a gift for them. Depp then tossed handfuls of candy into the crowd before making his exit as the sound of rattling chains filled the room. He closed the appearance with the line, “It’s good to be back,” a moment that resonated with both the audience and the actor’s longtime fans.
Depp also delighted conventiongoers with a second appearance as Scrooge at a special Ebenezer installation in San Diego, giving fans another chance to experience the character ahead of the film’s release.
Joining Depp in the star-studded cast are Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen.
Ebenezer arrives in theaters on November 13.
