During a heartfelt conversation with Keke Palmer, the actress opened up about everything from making her Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing to growing up as the daughter of music legend Diana Ross. She also shared unforgettable childhood memories with icons like Marvin Gaye and Lucille Ball, hilarious stories from the Girlfriends set, and even recalled confidently correcting Michael Jackson after he forgot the lyrics to one of his own songs.
One of the most meaningful moments of the interview came when Ross reflected on relationships and why she proudly considers herself “the chooser.”
“I am worthy of choosing the right partner,” she explained. “I don’t have to sit around waiting to be chosen. I’m responsible for my own happiness.”
Ross admitted that for years she internalized society’s expectations surrounding marriage and motherhood, believing there was something wrong with her because she wasn’t following the traditional path. Today, however, she has completely embraced living life on her own terms.
Keke Palmer praised Ross for changing the conversation around single women, saying she related deeply to Ross’ perspective and never understood why society often measures a woman’s success by her relationship status.
Ross agreed, pointing to the pressures of sexism, ageism, and outdated societal expectations that continue to shape those conversations.
The pair also reflected on Ross’ beloved Girlfriends character, Joan Clayton, noting how viewers eventually realized Joan often stood in the way of her own happiness by pretending she wasn’t the one making the choices in her relationships.
When the topic turned to interviews, Ross revealed there’s almost nothing she’s uncomfortable discussing—except one question she never wants to hear again.
She recalled how, during her Black-ish years, interviewers constantly asked why she hadn’t had children.
“I remember finally saying, ‘Will you get out of my womb?'” Ross joked. “Why are you asking me that?”
The conversation also ventured into fashion, with Ross showing off a Sergio Hudson ensemble and reminiscing about a robe collaboration inspired by the glamorous backstage robes her mother, Diana Ross, famously wore.
Ross credited legendary women like Diane Keaton, Carol Burnett, and Lucille Ball for shaping her own comedic style, praising their fearless performances and expressive faces.
“I never want to stop laughing,” Ross said. “I never want to stop smiling.”
That naturally led into a conversation about aging and beauty standards. While emphasizing that she supports everyone making whatever choices help them feel confident, Ross said she personally loves seeing expression and movement in her face.
“I love the life in my face,” she said with a laugh. “I don’t want to look like a baby dolphin.”
The two also joked about skincare, neck creams, sunscreen, and the realities of getting older, proving they could find humor in every stage of life.
The interview wrapped with Ross teasing even more stories she’d saved for Keke, including revealing the celebrity who once left her completely starstruck, before the pair geared up for a playful round of “Acting Casual,” a hilarious dating game centered around awkward flirting and comedic improv.
