Misty Copeland is stepping into a whole new creative world with her latest book, Starfire Academy: Firebird, a middle-grade fantasy that is a departure from the stories she has written in the past.
During the conversation, Copeland explained that much of her previous work has been inspired by her own life experiences. From her memoirs to her children’s books, her writing has often drawn from her childhood and her journey as a young dancer. With Starfire Academy: Firebird, however, she had the opportunity to let her imagination take the lead and create an entirely new world filled with original characters, magic and adventure.
Rather than finding the creative shift difficult, Copeland said she has been having a great time exploring this side of storytelling. As someone who has spent her career telling stories through dance and the arts, creating new characters and an imaginative universe has been a natural and exciting extension of her creativity.
The book is the first installment in a planned series and is inspired by Copeland’s love of ballet and the performing arts. The story follows 12-year-old Josie, who is accepted into an elite performing arts academy where students from different backgrounds and artistic disciplines come together. While dance is an important part of the story, the academy celebrates a variety of art forms.
Once Josie arrives, she discovers that the prestigious school holds a much bigger secret it is filled with magic. At the center of this enchanting world is Miss Fiona, one of the academy’s teachers and an important mentor to the students, who becomes connected to the magical Firebird realm.
Copeland described the story as one centered on friendship, courage, curiosity and mentorship, while also creating the kind of immersive magical universe that reminded the interviewer of Harry Potter. The comparison speaks to the book’s sense of discovery, particularly as young characters enter a mysterious school, meet mentors and uncover secrets they never imagined existed.
And naturally, the conversation turned to the possibility of bringing Starfire Academy to the screen. When asked whether she would consider playing Miss Fiona in a potential television adaptation, Copeland didn’t hesitate. With a laugh, she said she would gladly take on the role.
For Copeland, Starfire Academy: Firebird represents more than just another book—it is an opportunity to introduce young readers to a magical world shaped by her lifelong love of the arts, while encouraging them to embrace friendship, bravery, curiosity and the power of their own imagination.
