Comedian D.L. Hughley stopped by The Jennifer Hudson Show on Thursday, October 15, and honey, he came with some stories! From getting fired by the legendary Stevie Wonder not once, not twice, but THREE times, to sharing heartfelt memories of his father, D.L. had the audience laughing one minute and reflecting on life the next.
Making his first appearance on Jennifer’s daytime talk show, the comedian, actor, radio personality, and original King of Comedy opened up about his incredible journey in entertainment, the people who inspired him, and his new book, Charlie’s Boy.
And let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like a comedian who can make you laugh while dropping a little wisdom along the way!
Wait a Minute! Stevie Wonder Fired D.L. Hughley Three Times?
Now, this was the part that had me cracking up!
During his conversation with Jennifer Hudson, D.L. revealed that he once worked at Stevie Wonder’s Los Angeles radio station, KJLH, alongside radio personality Cliff Winston.
Of course, anyone familiar with D.L. knows he has never been afraid to speak his mind, and apparently, that personality got him into a little trouble back in the day!
D.L. recalled joking about the condition of the radio station and wondering whether things would look different if Stevie could actually see the place.
Well, honey, word got back to Stevie, and before D.L. knew it, the music legend showed up and fired him!
But that wasn’t the end of their working relationship.
D.L. shared that Stevie fired him again after he used some colorful language during the singer’s House Full of Toys charity event.
And the third time? That story was just as funny!
D.L. recalled that Stevie unexpectedly showed up at his Christmas party a few years ago and started singing holiday songs. Since D.L. had his own syndicated radio show, he figured it was the perfect opportunity to ask Stevie about getting a spot on his Los Angeles station.
Stevie’s answer? Absolutely not!
I was tickled listening to this story because can you imagine getting fired by Stevie Wonder and still having the nerve to ask him for another job? D.L. is something else, lol!
The Sweet Meaning Behind His New Book, Charlie’s Boy
The conversation eventually turned to something much more personal: D.L.’s new book, Charlie’s Boy.
The title is a tribute to his late father, Charlie, who played an enormous role in shaping the man D.L. became.
Growing up in Los Angeles, D.L. explained that his father rarely called him by his given name, Darryl. Instead, he simply called him “boy.”
As a child, D.L. didn’t particularly appreciate the nickname. But as he grew older, he began to understand that it represented a special bond between father and son.
He wasn’t just any boy. He was Charlie’s boy.
How touching is that?
D.L. described his father as one of the most important people in his life, someone whose example continues to guide his decisions, values, and outlook.
Although his father wasn’t particularly affectionate or expressive with his emotions, D.L. always understood that he was loved.
In fact, when D.L. once asked his father if he loved him, his dad essentially reminded him that he had food on the table!
Talk about old-school parenting!
The Hilarious Truth About His Father’s Work Ethic
Now, just when things were getting emotional, D.L. brought the laughs right back!
He explained that he modeled his own strong work ethic after his father, believing that his dad worked tirelessly to provide for the family.
D.L. said he rarely takes time off because he grew up watching what he thought was his father’s incredible dedication to work.
But after his father passed away, D.L. learned something hilarious at the funeral.
According to his father’s former coworkers, Charlie wasn’t exactly working himself to the bone!
Apparently, he spent plenty of time playing cards, supervising others, and enjoying himself at Delta Airlines.
D.L. couldn’t believe it!
He even joked about discovering that his father had taken coworkers to Disneyland when he hadn’t taken his own son.
Girl, I would have had questions too!
What made the story so entertaining was the way D.L. balanced genuine admiration for his father with his signature sharp humor.
Despite all the funny revelations, it was clear that his father remained his hero.
From the Original Kings of Comedy to a Lasting Legacy
D.L. Hughley has enjoyed an impressive career spanning stand-up comedy, television, radio, and writing.
As one of the legendary Original Kings of Comedy, alongside Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and the late Bernie Mac, he helped create one of the most memorable moments in modern stand-up comedy history.
His appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show also highlighted the brotherhood behind that iconic comedy success and the inspiration he has drawn from musical greats such as Marvin Gaye.
Now, with Charlie’s Boy, he’s sharing another side of himself: the son behind the comedian.
And I think that’s what makes stories like these so special. We get to see the person behind the public personality.
Tami’s Take: Sometimes the Funniest People Have the Most Heart!
I’ve always enjoyed entertainers who can tell a good story, especially when they can have you laughing hysterically one minute and getting emotional the next.
D.L. Hughley definitely knows how to do both!
What stood out to me most wasn’t just the hilarious Stevie Wonder stories, although those were absolutely priceless. It was hearing how much his father influenced the man he became.
So many of us grew up with parents or grandparents who weren’t necessarily big on hugs, compliments, or saying “I love you” every five minutes. Instead, they showed their love by providing, protecting, and teaching us life lessons.
Sometimes we don’t fully understand those lessons until we’re older.
I also loved hearing D.L. reflect on his father’s legacy with so much humor and affection. It reminded me that family stories, even the funny and imperfect ones, are worth preserving.
And honey, if Stevie Wonder ever fired me three times, I think I would have finally gotten the message! Ha!
What do you think? Could you imagine being fired by Stevie Wonder three times? And did D.L.’s stories about his father remind you of anyone in your own family?
