The Tapoco Lodge, located in Robbinsville, North Carolina, has a rich and fascinating history. I had the pleasure of staying here over the weekend and I had a blast!
Tapoco Lodge was built in 1930 by the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) to provide accommodations for its employees working on the Cheoah Dam and Santeetlah Hydroelectric Development.
The lodge is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains, providing stunning natural scenery and a serene environment.
The lodge’s architecture reflects a rustic, early 20th-century style, with log and stone construction that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
Tapoco Lodge gained some fame when the movie “The Fugitive,” starring Harrison Ford, was filmed nearby. The Cheoah Dam, featured in the movie, is just a short distance from the lodge.
Over the years, the lodge has undergone several renovations to preserve its historical charm while updating facilities for modern guests. It continues to operate as a resort, offering a blend of historical ambiance and contemporary amenities.
Tapoco Lodge offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and kayaking, taking advantage of its location near the Cheoah River and the Appalachian Trail.
The area around the lodge is rich in wildlife, making it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.
The lodge is an integral part of the local history of Graham County and reflects the industrial and cultural development of the region in the early 20th century.
These aspects make Tapoco Lodge not just a place to stay but a historical landmark with stories to tell and natural beauty to explore. I had an amazing time and highly recommend it! See all the fun we had inside…
