Viola Davis received the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2025 Golden Globes, but viewers didn’t get to see her accept it on air.
The 59-year-old EGOT winner was honored for her “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” but her acceptance speech was delivered at a separate event two days before the Golden Globes. The speech, which Davis delivered without a teleprompter for over 15 minutes, was posted in full on the Golden Globes’ official YouTube channel.
The decision to present the award outside the main telecast drew some criticism online. One viewer pointed out that previous winners of the Cecil B. DeMille Award had received a full segment, while Davis’ acknowledgment was only a brief mention. According to a recap of the Friday event, the Golden Globes chose to honor the recipients in a more focused ceremony, giving them dedicated time for speeches and clips.
In her emotional speech, Davis reflected on her journey, saying, “Little Viola is squealing… she’s pulling on my dress.” Before receiving the honor, she told USA TODAY, “This is the first award that made me cry… Little Viola showed up who never could imagine this life. I feel incredibly grateful.”
One thing’s for certain: she absolutely radiated on the red carpet. Viola Davis stunned in a black, sparkling gown, effortlessly complemented by a dazzling cape draped over her shoulders. As she moved beneath the lights, the cape shimmered with iridescent rainbow hues. Her style is always on point, and her glam team truly knows how to bring her vision to life!
