From the very first scene, I was completely transported. The breathtaking landscapes of Oahu, Hawaii filled the screen with lush mountains, crystal blue waters, and tropical beauty that instantly made me feel like I had stepped into paradise. The stunning island scenery created the perfect backdrop and truly set the tone for an unforgettable adventure.
Then we meet the incredible Catherine Lagaʻaia, the talented 19-year-old Australian actress who brings Moana to life with so much heart, courage, and warmth. She was absolutely captivating from beginning to end. In Disney’s live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated classic, Moana answers the Ocean’s call and journeys beyond the reef of Motunui alongside the legendary demigod Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, on a daring quest to restore hope and prosperity to her people.
While the breathtaking visuals were unforgettable, what truly touched my heart was the beautiful relationship between Moana and her grandmother. Their bond was built on unconditional love, wisdom, encouragement, and faith. Her grandmother believed in her long before she believed in herself, and even after her passing, Moana carried her grandmother’s love and guidance with her every step of the way. It reminded her that even when the journey became difficult, she was never truly alone.
That part of the story resonated deeply with me.
As a grandma to two precious grandsons, family means everything to me. Watching Moana honor her grandmother’s legacy reminded me just how important it is to pour love, wisdom, and encouragement into the next generation. It also made me reflect on my own grandmother. I didn’t have the opportunity to know her as well as I would have liked, but from everything I’ve learned about her, she was a strong woman who didn’t let anyone walk over her. She fiercely loved her family, always planned ahead, and wasn’t afraid to stand her ground.
I definitely inherited some of my granny’s spicy personality! I know how to take care of myself, speak up when needed, and stand firm in what I believe. I’m definitely no pushover—just like her.
Moana’s parents and grandmother loved her unconditionally and prepared her for the incredible destiny ahead. As the spirited daughter of the village chief, she is chosen by the Ocean to restore the heart of the goddess Te Fiti. When darkness threatens her island, she bravely sails beyond the reef in search of Maui to help save her people. Their adventure is filled with laughter, danger, friendship, and self-discovery.
Dwayne Johnson is as entertaining as ever as Maui. He’s confident, hilarious, a little full of himself, but incredibly lovable. And let’s not forget Moana’s adorable sidekick, HeiHei! The dim-witted rooster had the audience laughing throughout the film and easily stole several scenes with his goofy charm.
The story was beautifully told, easy to follow, and full of heartfelt moments for audiences of every age. One of my favorite parts, however, was the incredible costume design. Costume designer Liz McGregor, a Tongan New Zealander, beautifully showcased Polynesian culture through every handcrafted detail. The film features more than 2,000 hand-painted, braided, and woven costume pieces, each one adding authenticity, richness, and beauty to the story. Every costume felt like a work of art.
Disney has created another visually stunning adventure that’s filled with heart, family, courage, laughter, and unforgettable music. Whether you grew up loving the animated classic or you’re experiencing Moana’s journey for the very first time, this live-action version is one the entire family can enjoy together.
Be sure to gather your loved ones and experience the magic when Disney’s Moana sails into theaters this Friday. It’s a beautiful reminder that with courage, love, and a little faith, the ocean can lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.
