Leslie Jones stopped by Live with Kelly and Mark to chat about everything from the nerves that still hit her before every stand-up performance to the wild rental homes she’s roasting in her new series, Roast My Rental.
When Kelly Ripa pointed out that comedy is one of the hardest jobs there is, she asked Jones if she still gets nervous after so many years on stage.
“Absolutely. All the time,” Jones admitted. “If I don’t get nervous, I don’t want to go up. Being nervous means you care. You care about what you’re bringing to the audience.”
She explained that stand-up demands complete focus in the moment, making those pre-show jitters part of the process.
“When you’re doing comedy, you have to be present,” she said. “You have to forget about everything else that’s going on and just go out there and perform.”
Kelly confessed that hearing Jones still gets butterflies made her feel better because the comedian always comes across as incredibly confident and self-assured. Jones immediately laughed off the compliment, joking that it was hilarious anyone would describe her that way.
The conversation then shifted to Jones’ hilarious new reality series, Roast My Rental, where she helps vacation rental owners confront the issues keeping guests from coming back.
Jones said nearly everyone has checked into a rental and instantly regretted it after being hit with a strange smell or spotting questionable conditions.
“A lot of these owners are blind to it,” she explained. “They’re nose-blind, color-blind—they’re just used to it.”
Her job is to deliver some tough love, reminding owners that paying guests aren’t family members—they’re customers expecting a clean, comfortable place to stay.
According to Jones, many hosts ignore honest guest reviews that mention unpleasant odors, stained mattresses, or other obvious problems because they focus only on the positive feedback.
“They’ll say, ‘We had more good reviews than bad,'” she joked. “And I’m like, ‘You have carpet in your bathroom!'”
One of her favorite questions to ask owners is whether they would actually have their own family stay there. Their answer often says it all.
Jones also shared some of the funniest discoveries she’s encountered while filming, including rentals decorated with personal family photos and even one home where the owners had left clothes hanging in the closet—including nothing but left shoes.
Kelly and Mark couldn’t stop laughing as Jones joked that the show is more than entertainment—it’s practically a public service announcement for travelers.
Roast My Rental premieres Friday at 10 p.m.
