Actress, comedian, and author Tisha Campbell stopped by The Jennifer Hudson Show on Thursday, October 29, and what a beautiful conversation it was! I’ve always loved Tisha because she’s funny, fabulous, and unapologetically herself. But this time, we got to see an even more personal side of the beloved actress as she opened up about motherhood, raising her son Zen, and the emotional journey behind her new book, The A Word.
And let me tell you, this conversation was filled with so much love, laughter, and a few heartfelt moments that really made me smile!
Tisha Campbell’s New Book Is a Love Letter to Her Son Zen
During her visit, Jennifer Hudson asked Tisha what inspired her to finally share her story. Tisha explained that The A Wordisn’t your typical celebrity memoir. Instead, it’s a deeply personal love letter to her son Zen, chronicling their journey through autism, motherhood, and unconditional love.
Tisha admitted that she was initially nervous about sharing such intimate details because she’s always been extremely protective of her children. However, it was actually Zen who encouraged her to move forward with the project!
After watching Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum and seeing how warmly audiences embraced the cast, Tisha realized that sharing her family’s experiences could help other parents and families navigating similar journeys.
With Zen’s blessing, she decided it was time to tell their story.
What I found especially touching was how grateful Tisha was to the fans who have embraced her son. She shared that the outpouring of love has given Zen tremendous confidence, and she thanked everyone for treating him like their very own internet nephew.
Now, how sweet is that?
Taking Off the Mask and Showing the Real Tisha Campbell
One of the most powerful moments came when Tisha revealed what writing the book taught her about herself.
She explained that while The A Word includes helpful resources and information about her experiences raising Zen, she didn’t want it to feel like a textbook. She wanted readers to experience the emotional moments, challenges, humor, and hope that have shaped their lives.
And because this is Tisha we’re talking about, you already know she had to sprinkle in a few jokes!
But underneath all that humor was a very vulnerable admission.
For the first time in her life, Tisha felt comfortable taking off the smiling mask that celebrities often wear in public. Instead of presenting a character or the polished version of herself that audiences are accustomed to seeing, she wanted readers to get to know the real woman behind the laughter.
I absolutely loved that!
As women, mothers, and grandmothers, we sometimes become so accustomed to being strong for everybody else that we forget we’re allowed to be vulnerable, too. There’s something beautiful about reaching a place in life where you can share your story without feeling the need to make everything look perfect.
And that’s exactly what Tisha is doing with this book.
Tisha Campbell Talks About Her Son Zen and Dating
The conversation also took a lighter turn when Jennifer asked Tisha about her sons and their dating lives.
Tisha shared that Zen has been exploring the dating world through a fun online series they created called You Pick, I Date. The project gives him an opportunity to become more comfortable with dating while enjoying the experience.
She also mentioned her younger son, Zeke, who is 17.
I thought it was adorable hearing Tisha talk about her boys! You could see just how proud she is of them and how much joy they bring into her life.
Gabrielle Union Reveals How Tisha Campbell Supported Her During a Difficult Time
Another standout moment came when Jennifer brought up a recent shout-out from actress Gabrielle Union, who publicly acknowledged Tisha for helping her during a challenging period in her life.
Tisha revealed that when Gabrielle’s career was beginning to take off, she wanted to make sure the younger actress had the emotional support she needed.
So what did she do?
She paid for 10 therapy sessions to help Gabrielle get started!
Tisha explained that she encouraged Gabrielle to continue attending therapy because she genuinely wanted her to be okay.
Now, that is what I call women supporting women!
Tisha credited her upbringing and the women she came up with in Hollywood for teaching her the importance of lifting one another up.
She even reflected on her longtime friendship with actress Tichina Arnold, explaining that although they often found themselves auditioning for the same roles, they never allowed professional competition to interfere with their support for one another.
I absolutely adore that message, especially in an industry where women are so often encouraged to compete instead of collaborate.
There’s room for everybody to shine, and sometimes the greatest gift you can give another woman is encouragement, kindness, or simply helping her find the resources she needs.
New Lifetime Movie, Laughs and a Jennifer Hudson Surprise!
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Tisha Campbell appearance without a little comedy!
The actress also discussed her latest Lifetime film and revisited the hilarious viral moment from her previous appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
And Jennifer couldn’t let her leave without another memorable surprise: enormous bags of snacks!
Between the laughs, heartfelt revelations, and playful moments, Tisha reminded everyone why she’s remained such a beloved personality throughout her career.
Tami’s Take: A Beautiful Reminder That Every Mother’s Story Matters
What I appreciated most about this interview was seeing Tisha Campbell speak so openly about her journey as a mother.
As a mom and grandmother myself, I know how deeply we love our children and how much we want to protect them, encourage them, and help them become the very best versions of themselves.
What stood out to me was that Tisha didn’t tell Zen’s story without him. She made sure he wanted to share it, too. That level of respect and understanding between a mother and her son is truly special.
I also loved her message about women helping women. From supporting Gabrielle Union to sharing her own family’s experiences in hopes of helping others, Tisha is showing that kindness can have a lasting impact.
And can we talk about how refreshing it is to see a celebrity embrace getting older, motherhood, menopause, personal growth, and vulnerability with a little humor thrown in? I am here for all of it!
If there’s one thing I took away from this conversation, it’s that our stories have value, even the messy, emotional, and imperfect chapters.
Sometimes sharing what we’ve been through is exactly what someone else needs to hear.
Tisha Campbell’s The A Word is a celebration of love, resilience, acceptance, and the beautiful bond between a mother and her son.
