First Look: Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for “Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip,” putting the spotlight on Madea’s unapologetically foul-mouthed brother, Uncle Joe and this time, he’s taking center stage. The film marks the first full-length movie in the Madea universe with Uncle Joe as the lead character.

In the comedy, Joe embarks on a cross-country road trip with his sheltered grandson, B.J., determined to give him a crash course in real life before he heads off to college. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film also stars Jermaine Harris, Amber Reign Smith, and comedian Ms. Pat, adding fresh energy and humor to the beloved franchise.

Tyler Perry, who reprises multiple roles including Uncle Joe, Madea, and Brian Simmons (B.J.’s father), spoke highly of his cast in an exclusive interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act. Perry praised Harris as a standout talent, noting their previous collaboration on Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding. “I had so much fun bantering with him,” Perry shared. “He is such a great talent and brilliant actor. It was a joy to work with him again, and I hope to see him rise as far as his faith will let him.”

Perry also applauded Amber Reign Smith, saying her audition immediately caught his attention. “Her vulnerability in every role she plays brings the characters to life in a way only a truly gifted actor can,” he said.

When asked why now was the right time to give Uncle Joe his own film, Perry revealed that Joe was actually his very first character even before Madea. “He’s always been the more irreverent one,” Perry explained. “The timing felt right because Joe has a lot to say about the world today, from a voice and perspective that’s been missing for a long time.”

Fans will notice a refreshed version of Uncle Joe in Joe’s College Road Trip. Previously portrayed as a frail, oxygen-dependent senior in earlier Madea films, Joe is reimagined as a surprisingly fit and fearless older man complete with scenes where he takes on an entire motorcycle gang in a bar. “Joe is his own personality,” Perry added. “He brings a fresh, though still foul-mouthed, voice to the franchise.”

Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip premieres February 13 on Netflix, promising laughter, heart, and a bold new chapter in the Madea universe.
